This highly specialized bachelor of arts (BA) program is designed for students like you who wish to continue with graduate study in order to become art conservators or enter an art materials safety profession.

The was developed observing the American Institute for Conservation guidelines and offers you intense training in chemistry, materials science, studio art, and art history, as well as practical application in internships and abroad.

After you complete the program, you will be prepared for graduate study or for work in the field of arts material and safety. As a pre-art conservation student, you will be provided with a broad foundation in the history of art, intimate knowledge of materials from studio courses and the material science necessary to conserve and preserve cultural heritage. Additionally, you will have built a solid foundation in the philosophy and ethics of art conservation and preservation.

The requires you to intensively study chemistry, foreign language, art history, and studio art, as well complete two internships where safety in handling various materials is emphasized. It is highly recommended that you also study for one semester during your junior year at Studio Arts Centers International in Florence, Italy under conservators who address theory and practice in the field.

Required Equipment

This program has immersive reality technologies integrated throughout the curriculum and requires use of a virtual reality headset identified by the department and associated applications. Immersive realities, such as virtual reality, provide a fully immersive educational experience that leads to greater engagement and understanding of subjects covered in classes. Students are not only able to engage with the material, other students, and their instructor; they also can better understand the context of those relationships while immersed in the virtual environment. These experiences support the learning outcomes for the program and prepare students for use of these technologies in their professions.
